USC Enrolls Record SC Students: Why the Misconception? | South Carolina Education Insights (2026)

Is it really true that USC is enrolling a record number of South Carolina students? Despite the state's public universities receiving a surge in applications, some residents still feel that their institutions aren't giving in-state students the attention they deserve. But the reality is quite different. At a recent budget request presentation, University of South Carolina President Michael Amiridis addressed this misconception. He emphasized that the school is not turning away qualified South Carolina students. In fact, the university has seen a significant increase in admissions for in-state residents. This year, USC received over 60,000 applications, with approximately 15,000 coming from South Carolina residents. Of those, 75% were directly admitted, and another 15% were offered a bridge program to transfer in later. Only 10% of South Carolina applicants were denied admission. The university's enrollment is now over 40,000 students, with about 56.3% of the student body being from South Carolina. This figure has remained relatively stable over the past decade, despite a slight decrease from 61.8% in 2013. However, the university was enrolling around 10,000 fewer students back then. So, while USC is indeed enrolling a record number of South Carolina students, the perception that public universities are neglecting in-state residents is not entirely accurate. The university is actively giving preference to in-state students and ensuring that qualified residents are admitted. But the question remains: why is there this public misperception? It's a bit befuddling.
